OAKLAND, Calif., May 23, 2019 (Newswire.com) - Dictum Health – innovators in telehealth's Virtual Exam Room (VER) technology that brings the entire medical team to the point of care – announced publication of a study with results from a pilot program for pediatric surgical patients using Dictum Health's telehealth system with Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
CHoR has completed a one-year long telehealth pilot project and reported highly successful outcomes using Dictum Health’s telehealth solution. The solution, which includes Dictum Health’s IDM100 Medical Tablet and integrated Care Central cloud-hosted telehealth platform was used to conduct post-surgical follow-up consults and exams. The objectives, besides validating the performance of the system, were to compare the assessment and convenience of care provided via virtual means to that of traditional post-surgical follow-up consultations done in-person at the hospital facility.
Parents of the pediatric surgical patients were provided with the IDM 100 medical tablet in the hospital prior to discharge to take home for the follow-up visit and monitoring. Follow-up visits were conducted via live video, including simultaneous observation of patient clinical testing and results. This provided several benefits including reduced need for travel from distances as far as three hours away, increased convenience, fewer missed appointments and rescheduling, better engagement in follow-up care, improved efficiency of the post-surgery clinic, and there were no readmissions. In addition, patients were able to be discharged from the hospital up to 24 hours earlier due to the observational capabilities of the telehealth system, saving costs for the hospital, payors and patients.
CHoR published the outcomes from their project in an article in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. Some of the outcomes from the published article include:
- Parent satisfaction rating = 97%
- Parent acceptance of telemedicine visits in place of the in-person visit = 92%
- Telemedicine-only group required no additional surgical clinic visits, readmissions or emergency room visits 30 days post-operation
- Two patients were able to be discharged earlier (12-24h) than normally scheduled, none were readmitted, went to the emergency department or returned to the clinic
- Families saved an average of 80 miles of travel
- Prevented two probable emergency department visits and possible readmissions
- There were no problems with the telehealth equipment that prevented a history review, observed physical exam, assessment/plan and answering questions from the caregivers.
- The data suggest safe and effective care can be provided by utilizing a telehealth device with high parent and provider satisfaction in the postoperative care of pediatric surgical patients.
